The Mills Government will continue to focus on three key hubs as it works to strengthen the Northern Territory economy into the future.
Treasurer, Robyn Lambley, said the Territory’s economic base will broaden with a strategic focus on mining and energy, tourism and education and food exports.
“The latest Deloitte Access Economics business outlook illustrates the importance of broadening the Territory’s economic base,” Mrs Lambley said.
“While the outlook is positive overall, the report says the economy ‘will always’ rely on ‘a handful of key projects’.
“The Government wants to develop the economy by playing to our strengths and building on our proximity to Asia.
“Key ministers, including the Chief Minister, have visited key Asian markets to build ties with the Territory.
“Government is also developing international trade and investment strategies linking our key sectors with priority markets.”
The Deloitte’s Access report forecasts average growth over the next four years around 4.5 per cent, unemployment below 5 per cent and inflation around the 3 per cent mark.
“The economy will also be strengthened by better targeting resources at the frontline and cutting the Territory’s fiscal imbalance,” Mrs Lambley said.
“Only by reigning in debt will we have more to spend on hospitals, schools and roads into the future.”
