New works improve Carpentaria Highway

A $2 million upgrade to the Carpentaria Highway has strengthened and widened the road, improving flood immunity, safety, and access to the Gulf community of Borroloola.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adam Giles said the construction project has substantially improved drainage along 12.7 kilometres of the highway, in four sections including a major floodway.

“In many places there has been very poor drainage because of very little slope, so upgrades are vital to ensure the road remains usable all year,” Mr Giles said.

“Improvements to cattle roads, such as the Carpentaria Highway, are a key priority of this Government. Top End pastoralists who rely on the highway to transport cattle to Darwin Port will benefit from this upgrade.”

The Carpentaria Highway is the major access route for Borroloola and the Gulf region, especially for services provided from Katherine and Darwin.

Mr Giles said the improvements are important to theMcArthur River Mine, and the rapidly developing iron ore prospects along Nathan River Road, which rely on the highway for the provision of supplies and the transport of heavy equipment.

He said the Northern Territory Government is committed to upgrading further sections of the Carpentaria Highway, with more than $1.2 million dedicated to sealing various sections this year.

The project was funded by the Northern Territory Government under the Rural Arterials – Strengthening and Widening Program.
