Chief Minister Terry Mills yesterday visited the Naoetsu INPEX LNG Receiving Terminal north-west of Tokyo where gas exported from the INPEX LNG facility in Darwin will arrive in Japan.

Mr Mills said that once LNG exports begin out of Blaydin Point, the Naoetsu Terminal will be a storage point for Northern Territory gas.

“In full operation, the facility will be capable of storing up to 360,000 kilolitres of LNG and provide Japan with 10 per cent of its energy needs,” Mr Mills said.

“The LNG Receiving Terminal is part of INPEX’s long-term plans to secure natural gas supply in Japan and enhance its energy security, and the Northern Territory plays a crucial role in this.

“The Terminal project provides a welcome economic boost to the region with up to 700 contract employees working each day throughout the construction phase.

“Similarly, the INPEX project provides benefits to the Territory through increased employment, business and trade.

“The Northern Territory Government is committed to providing INPEX and other international energy companies with the security and stability they need to invest in the Territory gas market.

“My Government welcomes investment into the Northern Territory and is committed to encouraging exploration, both onshore and offshore.

“Today, I will meet with INPEX contractors including JGC to ensure that Territorians benefit as the project surges ahead.

“A major project such as INPEX should result in local jobs in Northern Territory industries including construction, manufacturing and service delivery.”

Mr Mills last night hosted a private function in Tokyo for senior Japanese business people with interests in the Northern Territory.
