The Country Liberals Government is taking responsible action and investing in the future of our burgeoning energy industry.

In a Territory first, nearly $1 million has been invested to establish the Department of Mines and Energy’s Energy Directorate. The Directorate will take a long-term, strategic approach to developing the Northern Territory’s energy industry.

Minister for Mines and Energy, Willem Westra van Holthe, said the investment was the Country Liberals Government’s way of setting a path for the strategic development of energy industries across the Territory

“The high-level, strategic policy directorate will co-ordinate and manage our emerging energy industries both upstream and downstream,” Mr Westra van Holthe said.

"Resource Economists and other energy-related experts will inform government on opportunities and priorities in developing future energy policy for the Territory.

“Fortunately, the Northern Territory is blessed with many natural resources. The energy directorate will be the first point of contact for investors and industry leaders looking to do business in the Territory.

“The team will have a focus on looking at our energy market across the Territory - from renewables right through to the development of unconventional gas.

“The directorate will be looking to see how different industries can complement one another and how we fit in domestic and international markets.

“We want to increase our rural and regional infrastructure to benefit business and Territorians. Pipelines, sealed roads and remote services will all be on the agenda.

“The Country Liberals Government is truly opening up the Territory for business. We want to see more remote jobs and an increase in regional employment.

“We want to make it easier for people to do business in the Northern Territory; the energy directorate will help build the Territory economy.”
