Developing Our Regions - Investing in Roads and Infrastructure

Posted On May 14, 2013

ADAM GILES
MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT
CHIEF MINISTER

The Country Liberals Government is committed to developing our regions for all Territorians and is delivering $320 million for transport infrastructure, including $287 million for Territory roads and national highways in Budget 2013.

Investing in Roads

Budget 2013 provides $95 million for repairs and maintenance to the Territory road network.

This is an increase of $10 million as part of a three year $30 million boost to the Regional Roads Maintenance Program for routine and specific maintenance within Shires.

Chief Minister Adam Giles said this Government is taking responsible action by supporting quality infrastructure.

“This funding is spread right across the Territory and will go a long way towards improving the safety and quality of roads, making travel easier for all Territorians,” Mr Giles said.

Key projects to be delivered under Budget 2013 include:

  • $55.2 million for strengthening and widening, flood immunity and safety improvements
  • $29.6 million to continue stream crossing upgrades at Goyder River and Badalngarrmirri (Donydji) River, and targeted pavement upgrades on the Central Arnhem Road
  • $17 million for strengthening and widening targeted sections and safety improvements including overtaking lanes on the Arnhem Highway
  • $13 million for construction of an overpass on Stuart Highway over the railway south of Alice Springs
  • $9.1 million to upgrade, strengthen and widen urban roads, rural arterialand local roads;
  • $6.5 million to continue construction of new overtaking opportunities at selected sections of the Stuart Highway between Darwin and Katherine
  • $5 million to upgrade the Charlotte River crossing on Fog Bay Road, including construction of a new bridge and associated approaches and drainage works
  • $5 million to City of Darwin for the duplication of Lee Point Road from Tambling Terrace to Vanderlin Drive
  • $5 million for continuation of the upgrade and seal of targeted sections on Tanami Road;
  • $4.9 million to continue sealing Namatjira Drive as part of the Mereenie Loop
  • $4 million for the Urban Arterial Traffic Management Program
  • $3.2 million for the Roads to Recovery Program on targeted local roads;
  • $2.5 million to upgrade and seal the existing airstrip at Kaltukatjara; and
  • $1 million for the Black Spot Program for road safety projects at targeted locations on Territory and local government roads.

Improving Access to the City of Darwin - Tiger Brennan Duplication

“The Country Liberals Government is looking after Territorians by ensuring the roads they travel on for work and recreation are the best we can afford,” Mr Giles said.

“This Government is committed to reducing traffic congestion and enabling motorists to get to and from home quicker through a $16 million contribution to begin duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive from the city to Berrimah.

“The work is part of an overall NT Government contribution of $33 million for the project being developed jointly with the Australian Government.”

Investing in Transport Infrastructure

The Territory Government is investing in building our economy and attracting more major industry by continued support of the $110 million Marine Supply Base.

“This facility will provide for the construction of the Ichthys LNG project’s gas pipeline and act as a specialised logistics base for the offshore petroleum industry.

“The Northern Territory Government is committed to supporting industry and growth in the NT and has provided $41.4 million for the Marine Supply Base in Budget 2013.

Reducing Vehicle Fleet Waste

The NT Government is cutting waste in the public sector to deliver services efficiently and effectively through cost reductions of nearly $8 million per year in the Government’s vehicle fleet.

The Country Liberals Government is taking responsible action to address Delia Lawrie’s former Government’s $5.5 billion debt mountain and has adopted a new vehicle policy framework that will achieve cost reductions for the NT.

Cost reductions will be achieved mainly through extending the working life of vehicles in the Government fleet and a policy focus on purchasing low-cost models that are fit for operational purposes.
