The Country Liberals Government has injected the Department of Mines and Energy with a $9.1 million boost totalling to a budget spend of $30.552 million.
The new Environmental Rehabilitation Levy combined with increase funding from the Government will reinvigorate the agency.
Minister for Mines and Energy, Westra van Holthe, said with the growth in our mining and energy sectors our Department must grow with it.
“The Country Liberals Government is acting responsibly by investing in the Territory economy and taking action to rehabilitate our legacy mine sites,” Mr Westra van Holthe said.
“The Department continues to do an amazing job in attracting business investment in the Territory. The Territory has the best conditions for doing business in Australia and now our Department is strengthened to ensure swift processes.
“Not only will our processes be improved but we have a new focus on remediation and rehabilitation of environmental legacy mines.
“$2 million will establish the Mining Remediation Contingency Fund to address legacy mine liabilities.
“$1 million will fund a new Dedicated Mining Remediation Team.
“The Department of Mines and Energy continue to do a superb job,” Mr Westra van Holthe said.
“The Country Liberals Government will plan responsibly to take action for the Territory’s future.
“We are building the Territory’s economy for all Territorians.”
