Mines and Energy Budget Boom

Posted On May 14, 2013

WILLEM VAN HOLTHE
MINISTER FOR MINES AND ENERGY

The Country Liberals Government has injected the Department of Mines and Energy with a $9.1 million boost totalling to a budget spend of $30.552 million.

The new Environmental Rehabilitation Levy combined with increase funding from the Government will reinvigorate the agency.

Minister for Mines and Energy, Westra van Holthe, said with the growth in our mining and energy sectors our Department must grow with it.

“The Country Liberals Government is acting responsibly by investing in the Territory economy and taking action to rehabilitate our legacy mine sites,” Mr Westra van Holthe said.

“The Department continues to do an amazing job in attracting business investment in the Territory. The Territory has the best conditions for doing business in Australia and now our Department is strengthened to ensure swift processes.

“Not only will our processes be improved but we have a new focus on remediation and rehabilitation of environmental legacy mines.

“$2 million will establish the Mining Remediation Contingency Fund to address legacy mine liabilities.

“$1 million will fund a new Dedicated Mining Remediation Team.

  • Other big ticket items for the Department include:
  • $1.1 million in additional to existing funding to improve mining approvals and water monitoring assessment of higher risk sites under the Mining Management Act.
  • $950 000 to establish an Energy Directorate charged with creating and implementing an energy strategy in the NT.
  • $200 000 in additional funding to improve the on-shore petroleum regulation.
  • $630,000 in additional funding for the management of the Mineral Titles Act.
  • $1.5 million in additional funding for the NT Geological Survey
  • $3.95 million for the new CORE (Creating Opportunities for Resource Exploration) pre-competitive geosciences initiative.

“The Department of Mines and Energy continue to do a superb job,” Mr Westra van Holthe said.

“The Country Liberals Government will plan responsibly to take action for the Territory’s future.

“We are building the Territory’s economy for all Territorians.”
