Safety measures implemented on busy intersection

Posted On September 26, 2013

PETER STYLES - MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT

The Northern Territory Government is implementing a raft of safety measures on a busy intersection of the Stuart Highway after safety concerns were raised by local residents.

Minister for Transport Peter Styles said reports had been received by members of the public of drivers’ running red traffic lights and other risky driving behaviours at the Jenkins Road / Stuart Highway intersection.

“In consultation with the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services, and the Department of Infrastructure, we deemed it would be appropriate to implement a number of safety measures,” he said.

“We will be installing red light cameras on the intersection of Jenkins Road and the Stuart Highway and reducing the speed limit on a stretch along the Stuart Highway.

“We believe it is appropriate to reduce the speed limit from 110km/h to 100km/h one kilometre south of the intersection, through to where the current 100km/h speed zone starts just before the Arnhem Highway intersection.”

Mr Styles said the speed reduction would come into effect on Thursday 3 October 2013, with variable message boards advising of the change in conditions one week prior to and one week after the change.

“The Northern Territory Government has ensured the NT is well and truly open for business and with so many major projects underway, we are experiencing an increase in heavy vehicle traffic,” he said.

“The Stuart Highway and Jenkins Road intersection is a major travel route for these heavy vehicles, and it is expected there will be more than 400 heavy vehicles crossing the intersection and using Jenkins Road, each day for the next 12 months alone.

“I believe the reduced speed limit, and the placement of red light speed cameras will address poor driver behaviour.”

Mr Styles said the Northern Territory Government were committed to the safety of its motorists, and took concerns from the residents very seriously.
