Public Opportunity to Shape the Future of Popular Top End Park

Posted On December 3, 2013

BESS PRICE - MINISTER FOR PARKS AND WILDLIFE

The Northern Territory has some of the world’s most beautiful natural environments and now the public have the opportunity to have their say on the management of the spectacular Nitmiluk National Park.

Minister for Parks and Wildlife Bess Price said Nitmiluk National Park is one of Australia’s most important natural areas, covering over a quarter of a million hectares.

“The Parks and Wildlife Commission NT has released a draft Plan of Management for Nitmiluk National Park,” Mrs Price said.

“The public now have an opportunity to have their input into the draft plan for the spectacular Nitmiluk Gorge and Edith Falls.

“The park is the most-visited tourist attraction in the Katherine region and is a major economic driver for the area.

“This draft plan will continue to improve the park’s international reputation, attracting more tourism to the NT and providing jobs and business opportunities for local Indigenous people.

“This draft plan details the objectives, goals, responsibilities and procedures for managing parks with public comment on the draft plan open until the end of January 2014.

“The main objectives are to maintain a fair and effective Nitmiluk Board, protect Jawoyn Traditional Owner knowledge and values and integrate them into how the park is managed.”

The park includes the spectacular 13km Nitmiluk Gorge and popular Edith Falls plunge pool at Leliyn in the Park’s west.

Nitmiluk National Park has been jointly managed by the Parks and Wildlife Commission NT and the Jawoyn Traditional Owners since 1989.

“Jawoyn Traditional Owners have been extensively consulted during the draft Plan’s preparation and the Jawoyn Association supports the release of the draft plan for public comment.”

Online tourism surveys and two tourism industry workshops were held as part of the Plan of Management Process.

The ideas and feedback received have helped shape the draft plan.
