ADAM GILES - CHIEF MINISTER
ROBYN LAMBLEY - MINISTER FOR HEALTH
The Giles Government is delivering on its promise to build a second hospital for Greater Darwin by today revealing the first details of the Palmerston Regional Hospital.
Federal Health Minister Peter Dutton, Chief Minister Adam Giles, Northern Territory Health Minister Robyn Lambley and the Federal Member for Solomon Natasha Griggs today released the Stage One Palmerston Hospital Scoping Study.
“We are building a bigger and better hospital for Palmerston and early works will start on the Palmerston site by the end of this year,” Mr Giles said.
“We have set aside up to 45 hectares of land for the hospital and health precinct on the Stuart Highway – that’s 15 times the size of the site Labor chose for its Mickey Mouse facility.
“Now that the stage one scoping study is complete, formal market testing and the expression of interest processes will be finalised. Informal discussions have already been held with a range of health providers, construction companies and financers and there is great interest in this project.
“This is an exciting development that will build our health capacity and allow Darwin to grow as the capital of Northern Australia.”
Mrs Lambley said today was another milestone for the Palmerston Regional Hospital.
“The Palmerston Regional Hospital will be bigger and better than any proposal put forward under Labor, with room to expand to meet the growing population,” Mrs Lambley said.
“The Stage One Scoping Study shows the hospital will deliver an emergency department to respond to the needs of the Palmerston region.
“It will also provide medical and surgical services including cardiology, renal medicine, cancer services, paediatric, antenatal and postnatal obstetric services, with birthing services to be delivered as part of Stage Two.”
“We are building a health precinct that will meet the needs of the vibrant and prosperous Palmerston and Rural Area population.”
The Federal Health Minister Peter Dutton will today also tour the $22.16 million expansion of Royal Darwin Hospital’s emergency department that includes two new operating theatres and additional short stay beds to boost capacity at RDH.
