Work to Begin on Channel Island Road Upgrade

Posted On April 4, 2014

PETER STYLES - MINISTER FOR INFRASTRUCTURE

Works will begin on Monday along sections of Channel Island Road to rehabilitate the road shoulder to prevent water damage and increase safety.

Minister for Infrastructure Peter Styles said the road works were vital for the road as it was frequently used by heavy vehicles.

“The works will extend the road shoulder to help protect the road edge from corrosion due to water and heavy vehicle traffic,” Mr Styles said.

“The end result will see an increase to the width of the road to its previous construction width which will ensure an increased safety to motorists.

“Due to the rapid growth in business in the Territory and with many major projects underway, there is an increase in heavy vehicle traffic on this road and these upgrades are essential.

“The Giles Government will continue to focus on the Territory’s vital infrastructure and transport assets to ensure safer roads across the NT.”

The work will take place at various sections of Channel Island Road, between Elizabeth River Bridge and the Wickham Point turn off.

Lane closures and a temporary speed reduction will be in place throughout the roadworks. Motorists are asked to please follow all direction and drive safely in this area.

The $600,000 project is completely funded by the Northern Territory Government as part of Repairs and Maintenance program.
