BESS PRICE - MINISTER FOR PARKS AND WILDLIFE
Visitors exploring the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens can now enjoy a fresh drink and quick snack with the opening of a new Café amongst the Garden’s wilderness.
Minister for Parks and Wildlife Bess Price said the Wesleyan Church had been refurbished as Eva’s Café, adding another great attraction to enhance the visitor experience at the Darwin Botanic Gardens.
“Territorians love the great outdoors and the opening of Eva’s Café allows friends and family to relax and explore the Gardens without having to travel too far for a bite to eat,” Mrs Price said.
“Visitors surveyed three to four years ago said the one element missing from the Gardens was a café and the Country Liberals have listened.
“Labor promised a Café in the Gardens years ago but nothing was done until the Country Liberals Government made it a reality.
“People can make the most of the Territory lifestyle and our beautiful park with pets and owners welcome in the outdoor area of the Café.
“Dogs are permitted in the Botanic Gardens provided they are under control, so it is great that they are allowed on the deck of the Café, where owners can enjoy the scenery and a cup of coffee while their pet is provided drinking water.
“The Café will be open daily from 7am to 3pm, seats up to 70 people and provides a range of hot or cold drinks, sandwiches, salads and snacks using local organic produce where possible.”
Although the Wesleyan Church is no longer listed on the NT Heritage Register, efforts have been made to retain the heritage character of the building by ensuring that the structure remains largely unchanged and any modifications are reversible.
More than 250,000 people visit the Gardens annually, and it is often used as a platform for many popular Darwin events including School Holiday Fun, Art Exhibitions and BASSINTHEGRASS.
Weddings and other functions at the Cafe can be arranged through the operator, and surrounding areas of the Gardens can be booked through the Botanic Gardens’ Event Coordinator.
