PETER STYLES - MINISTER FOR INFRASTRUCTURE, MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT
A new truck parking bay will be built on the Plenty Highway to provide a safer rest area for truck drivers.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Peter Styles said the new truck parking bay would see a sealed rest area for long haul drivers, allowing them the opportunity to break up their drive at a safe location.
“Our government is committed to delivering essential infrastructure for all of the Territory and this new parking bay will provide a huge benefit for our many long haul drivers,” Mr Styles said.
“The Territory has a unique road system, with long distances between destinations and with the increased number of heavy vehicles using our roads - suitable, safe and sealed parking bays is essential.
“This new parking bay is part of a jointly funded $2.5 million project on the Australian Government Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program with the Northern Territory contribution being $500,000.
“It will be constructed on the outbound direction of the Plenty Highway, replacing the existing informal truck parking area at the Dneiper/Arapunya Road intersection.”
Under the same funding allocation, the Giles Government will deliver two truck bays which are under construction on the Lasseter Highway and another truck bay for the Tanami Highway.
Tenders are currently being assessed for the Tanami Highway and Plenty Highway works.
Mr Styles said the works on the parking bay would see the construction of new gravel pavement and seal, accelerating and decelerating lanes, a heavy vehicle weighing pad and signage and line marking.
“The work is expected to begin in May and will take about three months to complete,” he said.
“Please take care in the area while work is underway and follow all directional signage as required.”
