NEW lanes on Tiger Brennan Drive have opened to traffic on the Woolner to Dinah Beach section of road.
Federal Member for Solomon Natasha Griggs said commuters were enjoying a first taste of the new section’s benefits.
“There is still work to do on this section of highway, however commuters are now able to drive on the new lanes,” Mrs Griggs said.
“Weekday traffic volume on this major road reaches 22,000 vehicles and we expect this to grow to 40,000 by 2030, so I am pleased we are on track with this duplication.
“This upgrade clearly demonstrates two levels of government working together to get on with job of building the Territory road network.”
Minister for Transport Peter Styles said it was great to see the works developing on this key arterial road as it would ultimately play a huge role in reducing traffic congestion to commuters coming in from Palmerston and the rural area.
“This is a joint project between the Northern Territory and Australian Governments and I am looking forward to the official opening with Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss at the end of June,” Mr Styles said.
“Works are expected to be completed on this section next month with further upgrades set to occur such as traffic lights to be installed at Gonzales Intersection, major works on a new median between the inbound and outbound lanes, street lighting, signs, line marking and landscaping.
“The contractors who have worked hard to get these lanes opening over the weekend deserve our thanks, and work on the duplication is continuing throughout the week with one of the lanes to be closed tomorrow to finalise kerbing works.
“I am looking forward to work beginning on the Woolner Road to Berrimah Road section in September with concept designs having recently been on display for the public to see.”
The Australian Government is investing $70 million in this upgrade, in partnership with the Northern Territory Government which is contributing $33 million.
