Alice Springs Justice Precinct takes Shape

Posted On May 9, 2014

ADAM GILES - CHIEF MINISTER

Work will begin in the second half of this year on a new multi-million dollar, state of the art Police Station in the Alice Springs Justice Precinct.

“I am pleased to confirm that the Alice Springs Police Station will be moving to the Greatorex Building in the Justice Precinct and that $9 million has been allocated for the new facility in Budget 2014,” Chief Minister Adam Giles said.

“It’s another example of the Country Liberals’ commitment to driving development in Central Australia and is in sharp contrast to Labor who ignored Alice Springs for 11-years in government, failing to upgrade basic infrastructure.

“The new custom-designed Police Station will provide improved IT capabilities and the flexibility of extra space to cater for joint investigations by different police units.

“The modern facility will also offer improved security for Police equipment and new training facilities including a tactical training area."

Tenders for demolition work inside new Greatorex Building are expected to be advertised later this month and locals should expect to see activity begin in the new financial year.

Tenders for the fit-out of the new building will be advertised before Christmas.

“This is another big stimulus to the local Alice Springs construction industry and is among a range of new developments on the horizon that will boost the local economy,” Mr Giles said.

“The Government is already in the process of upgrading the town’s ageing court complex by engaging the private sector to supply these expanded facilities.

“Tenders close on the 21st of this month for the provision of two new Supreme Court rooms which is double the rooms available in the current facility.

“Instead of the government building a new Supreme Court facility itself, we are demonstrating our commitment to private development in Alice Springs by renting the court space via a long term lease.

“This offer of a long-term foundation tenant is expected to encourage a private developer to proceed with a new building project in the Alice Springs Justice Precinct.

“Construction industry briefings have already been held in Alice Springs and I look forward to announcing the winning tender in the coming months.”
