Peter Chandler, Member for Brennan
Minister for Lands, Planning and the Environment
Key infrastructure works will begin today which will support the future development of sites in the Fannie Bay area including providing for the future redevelopment of the Sports House site and Kurringal Flats site as the Country Liberals strive to make housing more affordable.
Upgrades to mains water supply will be able to support residential redevelopment with the existing pipe capacity increasing by 50%. The project will cost approximately $330,000 and is crucial to making future development a reality.
Minister for Lands, Planning and the Environment Peter Chandler said urban infill is a key part of the government’s strategy to increase housing affordability and drive down the cost of living.
“In addition to investing over $80 million in residential land release in this year’s budget, the government has also identified over 70 infill sites across the Territory that could yield 2,700 dwellings, housing almost 8,000 people,” Mr Chandler said.
“Development proposals for Sports House were requested earlier this year and the government is currently considering development options.
“An Expression of Interest was released from Kurringal Flats in February and the Department of Housing is currently assessing the proposals.
“These sites are already located near infrastructure and essential services and provide more housing options for the Territory’s growing population.
“Works on the water main begin today and are expected to last five to six weeks.
“Local contractors have been engaged to complete the works which include five street crossings. Temporary paths will be available for pedestrians and residents to use.
“It is understood that the works may cause some inconvenience to local residents however I do ask for their patience. This is an important project that will deliver some real benefits for Territorians.
“I believe the Northern Territory is the greatest place in Australia to live and as a government we’ve made a commitment to make it a more affordable place to live. The best way we can do that is reduce the cost of housing.”
