Affordable housing project takes shape

Posted On August 1, 2014

Adam Giles
Chief Minister of the Northern Territory

The first units are being fitted out as part of an $8.6 million affordable housing project that's being fast tracked in Alice Springs.

"We all know that Alice Springs desperately needs more affordable housing and it is fantastic to see this multi-million dollar project now taking shape on Larapinta Drive," Chief Minister Adam Giles said.

“The Country Liberals have a plan for the future of Alice Springs and new housing stock is critical for the town to grow.

"The project is more proof of growing confidence in the building industry about the Central Australian economy.

“It comes alongside a number of large government construction contracts that are also boosting the local construction industry.

"The Probuild development is now half way to completion with the first already being fitted out. Slab work is now finished. Ground and block work are not far behind.

"I congratulate Probuild on their commitment to this important project for Alice Springs.

"So far, approximately $4 million has been invested directly into the community through the

engagement of local subcontractors, suppliers and employees on the Probuild project.

“This figure will more than double by the project’s completion in December.

“Locally employed subcontractors and directly employed Probuild staff currently number approximately 30 people at any one time.

"The development will include 14 three bedroom units and 11 two bedroom units, built as detached and semi-detached dwellings, significantly boosting the housing options available to prospective home buyers and renters in Alice Springs,” Mr Giles said.

The dwellings are all planned as low-rise, single storey buildings to minimize any visual and social impact upon neighbouring properties.

The properties include open plan living, ergonomic kitchens, ensuites, separate laundries, built-in robes to all bedrooms and double covered car parks.

“Under the Country Liberals, Alice Springs is going from strength to strength and it’s really encouraging to see new projects like this coming to fruition,” Mr Giles said.
