Posted On August 25, 2014

Chief Minister of the Northern Territory

Peter Chandler, Member for Brennan
Minister for Lands, Planning and the Environment

The Country Liberals Government’s record land release program is being supported by the development of a $300 million shopping centre on Roystonea Avenue in Palmerston.

Development approval has been given to Coombes Property Group to build the Gateway Shopping Centre which will create around 3,000 direct and indirect jobs, boosting the local economy.

Chief Minister Adam Giles had the pleasure of turning the first sod on site today.

“This development is a ringing endorsement of the Northern Territory’s economy and future growth prospects,” Mr Giles said.

“My government has been working tirelessly to create a business environment that encourages investment so we can meet the needs of a growing economy.

“I’m working to further expand our economy and secure future major projects so the Northern Territory continues to lead the development of North Australia.”

Minister for Lands, Planning and the Environment Peter Chandler said the Gateway development fits in with the governments land release program, the biggest in the Territory’s history.

“Earlier this year the Chief Minister and I launched Bringing on Territory Land Release, this government’s blueprint to increase housing affordability and reduce the cost of living.

“Part of that plan was major residential developments in Berrimah Farm and Holtze, The Gateway Shopping Centre will provide some of the services needed to support these new communities and the existing residents of Palmerston.

“This is the second large project to be announced in Palmerston in recent months which is a major confidence boost for the region.

“There are two suburbs under construction and two more on the way. Work has begun on the Palmerston Regional Hospital and two new schools being designed, it’s an exciting time to be in Palmerston.”
