The Federal and Northern Territory Governments have awarded a local Central Australian company the contract to build a $3.75 million facility supporting training, education and employment in the Barkly region.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion and Northern Territory Chief Minister, Adam Giles, today announced the outcome of a tender by Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation to build the new Youth Accommodation facility in Tennant Creek.

“The Australian Government is getting on with ensuring Indigenous Australians are provided with positive job opportunities and support,” Minister Scullion said.

“The construction of this new facility will support training, education and employment opportunities for those studying a vocational education and training (VET) course, traineeship or apprenticeship in the Barkly region.

“The Tennant Creek Youth Accommodation facility showcases the joint commitment by Australian and Northern Territory Governments to regional Australia and in particular Indigenous communities.”

Chief Minister, Adam Giles welcomed new facility which is much needed in Tennant Creek.

“This project will provide more than 20 new jobs especially targeting the engagement of and participation by young Indigenous people,” Chief Minister, Adam Giles said.

“It’s great to see that the contract for the new youth accommodation facility in Tennant Creek has been awarded to Central Australian company, MPH Carpentry and Construction.

“Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation will play a key role in project management of the construction contract and ensure there are training opportunities for Indigenous trainees and apprentices from across the region.”

The construction of the new facility will include two, eight-bedroom duplexes for both men and women, a common dining room with self-catering kitchen, recreation area and managers accommodation.

The project is due for completion by April 2015.
