The Northern Territory Government has released a tender for the $6.5 million redevelopment of an intersection that marks a key stage in the development of the Palmerston Regional Hospital.

Minister for Infrastructure Peter Styles said the work on the Stuart Highway and Temple Terrace intersection was an important investment into the future of the Palmerston and rural area.

“The redesigned intersection will improve traffic flow, improve safety and relieve congestion in the local area,” Minister Styles said.

“The design will allow for growth and development into the future, including safe access for emergency vehicles, visitors and staff as part of the operations of the new hospital.”

“Pedestrians will benefit from increased accessibility around the hospital campus with wider footpaths and additional crossings at the link road intersection.

“The Giles Government is committed to linking cycle paths through the new site with dedicated lanes resulting from the redevelopment, creating better connected cycle networks.

“These works are another large civil project to bolster investment in our local construction industry and demonstrate the Government’s commitment to building the economy.”

The intersection redevelopment is part of the Palmerston Regional Hospital head-works that is jointly funded by the Australian and Territory Governments.

Minister for Health Robyn Lambley said feedback from the community about the intersection works was important as part of ongoing consultation into the hospital’s development.

“A community meeting will be held at the Palmerston Library on 24 September 2014.  Community members will be able to ask questions of an engineer about the intersection development,” Minister Lambley said.

“We are committed to talking to the community and seeking feedback about all stages of the hospital’s development.

“This is important in making the hospital a campus for the community for Palmerston and the regional area.”

Work on the intersection is expected to begin in late October and will be scheduled to minimise disruption to motorists during peak traffic hours.

“I would urge motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to please obey all signage and drive, walk and ride carefully in the area, while the works are taking place,” Minister Styles said.

Intersection Design Community Feedback Sought

Overview
Designs for an upgrade of the intersection at Temple Terrace and the Stuart Highway, for construction of the new Palmerston Regional Hospital have been developed by local company, Byrne Design.

As the construction and operations of the hospital will increase traffic flow to the area, the upgrade of the intersection will improve safety for motorists and deliver improved traffic flow for vehicles using the intersection.

The works are anticipated to commence in late October 2014, prior to this, community feedback is sought on the design.

Location
Temple Terrace and the Stuart Highway

Benefits of the Plan

  • The new intersection will provide motorists with safe access for construction and operations of the new hospital
  • The intersection design aims to improve traffic flow, improve safety, relieve congestion at the intersection and create better connected cycle networks in the local area
  • A safer access and egress from the hospital and surrounding areas
  • Cyclists will enjoy new dedicated cycle paths that will result from the development
  • Pedestrians will benefit from increased accessibility around the hospital precinct with wider footpaths and additional crossings at the link road intersection
  • This is another large civil project to bolster investment in our local construction industry

Changed traffic conditions

  • Changed traffic conditions will be in place while some of these works are underway
  • Signage will be in place to guide motorists through any changed traffic conditions
  • The Department of Infrastructure recognises the impact work may have and will make every effort to minimise disruption by restricting works during peak traffic hours to minimise disruption to motorists
