Lee Point Road duplication officially opened

Today the Northern Territory Government celebrated the completion of the Lee Point road duplication between Vanderlin Drive and Tambling Terrace.

Minister for Transport Peter Styles said the completion of works will improve safety for vehicle and pedestrian traffic as he opened the road with Darwin Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim.

“Residents in the northern suburbs will benefit from an ease in traffic congestion now the duplication is officially open,” Mr Styles said.

“The northern suburbs are rapidly developing and with new suburbs such as Muirhead and Lyons, and the 300 room motel development that is part of the Lee Point Resort, traffic volume will continue to increase.

 “The Giles Government takes safety very seriously on our roads and we are committed to doing all we can to achieve this.

“The Government committed $5 million towards the duplication of Lee Point Road in a joint funding agreement with the City of Darwin.”

Country Liberals Candidate for Casuarina Dr Harry Kyperos, is a passionate advocate for issues that matter to local communities and said the duplication is welcomed by surrounding residents.

“The duplication of Lee Point Road is a major commitment by the Government to realise its vision of enhancing one of Darwin’s fastest growing areas,” Dr Harry Kypreos said.

“Lee Point Road is a main arterial route that connects communities to the busy transport hub, beautiful recreational reserves and a precinct that boasts large education and health services.”

Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim said improving our roads ensures Darwin is well placed to manage the challenges of a growing city and economy.

“The duplication of Lee Point Road helps meet the needs of our community and delivers better connections with Darwin’s new and existing suburbs, the hospital and the city,” the Lord Mayor said.

“The co-funded project demonstrates the shared vision Council and the Northern Territory Government have for increasing opportunity for Darwin.

“Long term environmental considerations were a factor in the design of the road upgrade, and LED street lights have been installed on Lee Point Road.”
