Works to begin on Santa Teresa Road upgrade

The Australian and Northern Territory Governments are getting on with delivering infrastructure to develop the North with construction on the $10 million Santa Teresa Road upgrade due to start on Monday 3rd November.

Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs said the Australian Government was funding the project as part of its $90 million Regional Roads Productivity Package.

The Northern Territory Government is also contributing an additional $16 million to support development in the regions, bring the total package to $106 million.

“This significant investment will help upgrade six regional and remote roads across the Northern Territory, including the Santa Teresa Road, meaning more work for local contractors and more reliable all weather roads for Territorians,” Mr Briggs said.

“The project will involve sealing around 16.7 kilometres of the Santa Teresa Road between Alice Springs and Santa Teresa.”

“This project is an important part of our record $602 million investment in world class infrastructure to develop the North, create jobs and build a stronger and more prosperous Northern Territory.”

Northern Territory Minister for Transport Peter Styles said construction works are underway with a tender awarded on 2nd October 2014 to Territory construction firm Aldebaran Contracting Pty Ltd.

“Santa Teresa Road traverses hilly country and the existing road drainage is quite poor, which can force closures in periods of wet weather,” Mr Styles said.

“The works to be carried out will improve access and road safety for Santa Teresa residents, tourists and service providers who travel to and from Alice Springs.”

“A new concrete floodway will also be built at Yam Creek crossing.”

“Construction will be carried out over eight months and is expected to be finished in May 2015.”

The Australian and Northern Territory Governments also recently announced a joint $40 million funding commitment to upgrade the NT section of the Outback Way for the next three years.
