Minister for Lands, Planning and the Environment
The Country Liberals Government is continuing to release land for development that will revitalise and renew our urban centres and provide housing and accommodation options.
Palmerston’s ‘Superblock’ is a 6060m² lot right in the heart of the CBD which has sat vacant since the satellite city was constructed in the 1980’s - that is about to change.
Prominent long-time Darwin developers, the Randazzo and La Pira families have joined forces and put forward a proposal to develop a $200 million 18 storey mixed-used development on the government owned site.
Minister for Lands, Planning and the Environment Peter Chandler said this will be the first development of its type which will bring even more people to the city.
“Boulevard Plaza will modernise and activate Palmerston’s CBD by providing residential accommodation in the city for the first time through 225 apartments, 185 hotel rooms and having street level access to over 10,000 square metres of retail and hospitality space,” Mr Chandler said.
“What’s becoming clear is that Territorians want more choice with their housing options. Apartments in Darwin are being snapped up at record rates and smaller blocks of land are becoming more attractive to home buyers.
“Living and working in the city has many economic and environmental advantages with less of a reliance on vehicles to commute to work, shops or social events.
“This development is also located a short walk from the Palmerston Interchange for those commuting to Darwin or the Northern Suburbs.
“There have been a number of new developments in Palmerston recently which show the increasing opportunities in the region arising from defence activities, the oil and gas industry and the new Palmerston Regional Hospital.
The Randazzo and Lapira families have been involved with many developments well known to the Palmerston community including the Palmerston Shopping Centre, Highway House and the Goyder Building.
The project will be lodged with the Development Consent Authority early next year with construction to follow shortly.
