Minister for Infrastructure

The Northern Territory Government has awarded more than $268 million in contracts over the past six months, to build essential infrastructure for the Territory.

“The Giles Government is committed to building a prosperous economy which will continue to secure jobs for Territorians,” Minister for Infrastructure Peter Styles said.

“More than 96 per cent of our contracts have been awarded to local Territory companies in the past six months, providing more job opportunities for Territorians.”

Mr Styles said the Territory Government is committed to boosting the Territory’s economy and had recently awarded contracts on a number of essential programs which are key enablers of economic growth.

“The Regional Roads Productivity package delivers more than $106 million in road upgrades over four years, to six major Territory roads, which includes $30 million for parts of Santa Teresa Road and Port Keats Road which have already been awarded,” he said.

“$88 million on the duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive and $37 million towards Police Infrastructure in urban and remote locations are examples of contracts that have been awarded to maintain and develop our vital infrastructure assets.

“Developing and building essential infrastructure to Territorians is part of our government’s plan to provide economic benefits and jobs back into the community.”

Minister Styles said there are also a number of major projects currently underway through the Territory which contribute towards a record spend.

“With a record spend since May this year of more than $301 million, which includes $112 million on roads, and $189 million on Infrastructure, the Giles Government is committed to delivering essential services to Territorians.” Mr Styles said.

Some of these projects include:

  • $14.2 million - Arlparra and Yuendumu Multi-Purpose Police Station (in partnership with the Australian Government)
  • $22.1 million - Royal Darwin Hospital – Expansion of the Short Stay Unit and Operating Theatres Suite
  • $9 million - New Police Station in Alice Springs
  • $4.6 million - Expansion of the Larrakeyah, Durack, Darwin Middle and Palmerston Schools
  • $3.3 million - Land Development in Alice Springs
  • Kilgariff Sub Division Headworks (tender closed)
  •  $44.3 million – Darwin, Humpty Doo Land Development
  • Zuzzoli Southern Connector Road and Bridge (tenders closed)
  • Zuccoli West Sewerage Pump Station and Rising Main (tenders closed)
  • $4.5 million – Victoria Highway/Bicentennial and Stuart Highway Bicentennial Road Upgrades
  • $2 million - Wurrumiyanga Barge Landing
  • $1.5 million - Oolloo Road Upgrade and Seal

Infrastructure Minister Mr Peter Styles said Territorians rely on road infrastructure funding for economic development to improve community engagement and help grow the Territory.

“The Territory Government is consistently investing in upgrades to its road network to connect businesses and producers with customers in Australia and overseas,” Mr Styles said.

“As Minister for Infrastructure I can assure all Territorians that the Northern Territory Government is continuing to benefit the economy of the Territory and the sale of TIO will ensure $215 million is transferred into the Infrastructure Development Fund.

“I will be advising my colleagues to spend this money on infrastructure that will benefit the economic future of the northern territory.
