The Hon. Warren Truss MP
Deputy Prime Minister of Australia
Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development
A series of federally funded upgrades along the Arnhem Highway have delivered safer and more efficient travel for Northern Territory motorists.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the Australian Government provided $20 million to fully fund the upgrades on more than 20 kilometres of the Highway, with the Northern Territory Government having spent $1.4 million on concurrent works.
“The works have not only provided a better road for Territorians but also a significant boost to the local economy,” Mr Truss said.
“The project supported jobs for 94 people through the various contracts, including 18 Indigenous employees and 27 apprentices.
“The Australian Government is committed to delivering infrastructure projects in the Northern Territory to improve road safety and stimulate growth and development in the region.”
Senator for Northern Territory Nigel Scullion said the project between the Stuart Highway and Mount Bundy included constructing four overtaking lanes and three truck parking facilities, as well as strengthening and widening nine sections of road.
“The Arnhem Highway is a vital route providing access for defence and tourism as well as servicing the East Arnhem Region and providing access for extractive industries,” Senator Scullion said.
Northern Territory Minister for Infrastructure Peter Chandler said the completion of works will improve safety for all road users and support economic development of the surrounding areas.
“The Northern Territory Government is continuing to focus on the future of the Arnhem Highway with $1 million funding for planning and design of improvements to the Adelaide River Floodplain under the Strategic Economic Roads Package,” Mr Chandler said.
