The Northern Territory government is seeking tenders for the $10.43 million Litchfield National Park upgrade.
Minister for Parks and Wildlife, Bess Nungarrayi Price, said the upgrades will be used to prepare the area for the rising number of new tourists to the region.
“It is renowned for spectacular waterfalls, safe swimming and opportunities to experience the rugged landscapes of the Top End, as well as being recognised as a premier conservation reserve for its high biodiversity and large number of species of conservation of value,” Price said
“As one of the Territory’s most popular tourist attractions it plays a key role in supporting, building and enhancing the Territory’s tourism industry and the Territory’s reputation as a must see/do destination.
Of some of the upgrades will include a redesigning of Sandy Creek Campground to provide seven additional campsites.
Member for Daly, Gary Higgins, said he was looking forward to the improvements at the park.
“I’ve said all along – Litchfield is a jewel – and it’s fantastic to see a commitment on improvements to the park coming to fruition,” Higgins said.
“These infrastructure projects will improve accessibility and enrich visitor and local experiences of the park. This is a great step forward.”
The upgrades aim to assist the territory’s target to grow the visitor economy in the Northern Territory to $2.2bn by 2020.
