The Australian government is calling for Expressions of Interest for the $600 million Northern Australia Roads Programme.
Minister for Major Projects, Paul Fletcher, made the announcement today for private sector companies to provide their designs.
“This month the Australian government will release a discussion paper on how the private sector can put forward ideas on innovative funding and delivery models that can maximise benefits of investment in transport infrastructure in the north,” Fletcher said.
“We want to test the appetite for a public-private partnership approach to the delivery of new and upgraded road infrastructure in Northern Australia.”
The Australian government is utilising the opportunity to test the viability for public-private partnerships.
Infrastructure Australia's Northern Australia Infrastructure Audit, published earlier this year, identified specific road infrastructure needs and to help inform project selection.
“For example, if an upgraded road can deliver faster or more reliable transport times, commercial users of that road may be interested in contributing to the cost of the upgrade,” he said.
“We are looking for ideas that will help leverage the investment by the Commonwealth and states and territories in northern Australia infrastructure.”
The decision is expected to be made early 2016.
