The Northern Territory government has announced $12.7 million worth of funding for a range of strategic road projects.
Minister for Transport, Peter Chandler, said there is no excuse for car crashes to occur during our lifetime.
“I plead with Territorians to abide by the road rules; slow down, don’t drink drive, don’t drug drive and organise a sober bob,” Chandler said.
“Through the grants program the government is investing in small to large sized infrastructure projects as well as feasibility studies, which will create real jobs and opportunities for local contractors and small businesses.”
19 successful grant applications were awarded as part of round two of the Strategic Local Roads Infrastructure Program.
Darwin Lord Mayor, Katrina Fong Lim, said the upgrades would ensure Darwin’s future as a safe, growing city.
“This upgrade will yield a number of community benefits including a reduction in commute times, reduced traffic congestion and improved traffic safety outcomes,” said Lim.
“The Cavenagh and Bennett Street intersection provides a link to Tiger Brennan Drive and the upgrade of this intersection is considered a critical transport solution.”
City of Darwin has been awarded $1 million to upgrade the Cavenagh street and Bennett street intersection.
