Works to seal the $25 million Mereenie Inner Loop will begin soon, with the tender being awarded to Sitzler Brothers.
Chief Minister, Adam Giles, said construction on the project would begin in January next year.
“Our investment in the ‘Inner Loop’ will help attract more tourists to the incredible West Macs through self-drives or guided tours and exploring unique destinations in the vast outback,” Giles said.
“The Country Liberals government is not wasting time to get this project done. Travel times will be cut, safety improved, there’ll be less risky traffic manoeuvres and the new road will provide reliability for vehicles.”
An estimated 140,000 people visited West Mac last year, which the 43 kilometre seal and upgrade hopes to further support.
Minister for Infrastructure, Peter Chandler, said the project would improve critical road sections for generations to come.
“This project will seal the last remaining unsealed section of the Mereenie Inner Loop giving year round access, particularly during heavy rain events which cut the road due to inadequate creek crossings,” Chandler said.
“The Mereenie Inner Loop is a key artery for access around the West Macs and the Giles government is continuously looking at ways to improve the roads and expand vital road networks.”
The government is also dedicating $4.75 million from the Tourism Infrastructure Development Fund to improving tourism infrastructure.
Works are expected to be complete by November 2016.
