Work has begun on the $1.8 million upgrade of Rum Jungle Road as part of Litchfield Tourist Park upgrades.
Minister for Infrastructure, Peter Chandler, said the upgrade would increase safety along Rum Jungle Road.
“The road works will provide locals and tourists a safer passage to one of the Territory’s most iconic national parks,” Chandler said.
“The Northern Territory government is committed to better access to remote and rural areas and the delivery of significant road projects to improve infrastructure across the Top End.”
The works will foresee the widening of several sections of the road, as well as improve drainage systems.
Member for Daly, Gary Higgins, welcomed the upgrades as a proud solution to meeting the high demand of traffic in the area.
“Rum Jungle Road provides an important link between the town of Batchelor and Litchfield National Park,” Higgins said.
“Litchfield National Park is one of the Top End’s most popular tourist destinations, with almost 330,000 people visiting the park in 2015.”
Construction is due for completion by June 2016.
