The construction of a new elevated water storage tank in Palmerston has reached a major milestone with the lifting of the tank bowl.
Minister for Essential Services, Peter Chandler, said construction on the water storage tank is being carried out by the Power and Water Corporation.
“The new wine-glass shaped water tank is being built to provide a secure water supply to the growing population of Bellamack, Zuccoli, Roseberry, Johnston and Palmerston South,” Chandler said.
“The Palmerston area has an annual growth rate of five per cent and this means local water infrastructure must be upgraded to accommodate future demand.”
The storage tank is expected to have the capacity to hold 1.5 Olympic swimming pools of water.
Water Services General Manager, John Pudney, said the $13.91 million project has been designed to ensure Palmerston’s future water supply.
“The final wine glass design will create increased efficiencies in use, cost and maintenance, as well as improve the aesthetics,” Pudney said.
“The tank will be built to withstand cyclone winds and earthquakes, and once complete, will stand at 36 metres high.”
Construction on the project will extend until July 2016.
