The contract to construct the $10 million Central Australia Renal Accommodation project has been awarded to the Central Australian Affordable Housing Company (CAAHC).
Australian Senator, Fiona Nash, said the company will renovate at least eight public housing properties in Alice Springs and two in Tennant Creek.
“Today I can announce that the Central Australian Affordable Housing Company (CAAHC) has been awarded the tender to deliver social housing for Indigenous Territorians with kidney disease,” Nash said.
“The Northern Territory government is moving ahead with this federally funded project to provide accommodation for patients and reduce the financial and emotional stress at a time when they are busy fighting kidney disease.”
CAAHC will provide tenancy and property management for the next 10 years as part of the contract.
CEO of Western Desert Dialysis, Sarah Brown, said dialysis patients would benefit from the move.
“Patients will be pleased that this tender has been awarded to a strong Aboriginal community controlled organisation,” Brown said.
“CAAHC has already met with patients and clinical staff to work out the very best way to provide sustainable and suitable housing for people who have to relocate for dialysis, often with their carers and other family members.”
The first houses are expected to be delivered February 2017.
