Local Katherine company Woodhill and Sons Pty has been selected to upgrade the Roper Highway.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester, said the works would upgrade three truck parking bays.
“The project will upgrade the parking bays from unsealed to sealed standard, providing a higher standard of rest stop for truck drivers,” Chester said.
“The Australian government is contributing $750,000 to these upgrades under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Programme, which is an initiative aimed at improving productivity and safety outcomes of heavy vehicle operations across Australia via investment in infrastructure projects.”
The $1.5 million project is being jointly funded by the Australian and Northern Territory governments.
Northern Territory Minister for Transport, Peter Chandler, said the project would benefit the territory’s freight and commuter industry.
“The Roper Highway is a critical road link providing access for the area's economically vital mining and cattle industries,” Chandler said.
“The highway is similarly crucial for residents and visitors travelling to and from the communities of Ngukurr and Numbulwar.”
The project is expected to begin May 2016.
