The Northern Territory government has announced the addition of a new $2.6 million ferry for the Mandorah ferry route.
Northern Territory Deputy Chief, Peter Styles, said SeaLink Travel Group were responsible for the upgrade.
“With the settlement of the Kenbi Land Claim the future possibilities for development on the Cox Peninsula are immense,” Styles said.
“The ferry will also support the Tiwi route as required and is expected to commence service in September.”
The new ferry measures up to 20 metres long and has a carrying capacity for up to 150 passengers.
Member for Arafura, Francis Kurrupuwu, said the tourism industry would benefit from the additional services.
“I know that the local Tiwi tourism enterprises look forward to working with these companies to promote the Tiwi Islands as a must-do destination for domestic and international travellers,” Kurrupuwu said.
“It is a unique and stunning part of the world and this new partnership will help spread the word about what we have to offer.”
SeaLink Travel Group is an Australian public company founded in 1989.
