The Northern Territory government has announced an allocation of $10 million to continue rehabilitation planning at the Rum Jungle Uranium mine site.
Minister for Mines and Energy, David Tollner, said that rehabilitation had been on-going in the area for decades.
“These activities have been administered through National Partnership Agreements with the Australian government since 2009 with the Australian government providing significant funding to support the rehabilitation planning,” Tollner said.
“This phase of the project represents significant economic and capacity building opportunities for local business and traditional Aboriginal owners in the Bachelor region.”
The funding will cover necessary repairs and maintenance to the existing cover system on the Waste Rock Dump.
Rum Jungle Creek South is a recreational reserve and continues to be a popular destination for tourists and locals.
“The works will ensure the long term integrity of the cover system by placing clean, compacted material and repairing existing drainage structures that are beginning to erode,” he said.
The Department of Mines and Energy will continue to coordinate the Rum Jungle rehabilitation planning project.
The preferred rehabilitation strategy will be implemented following planning.
