Construction to begin on Katherine St John Ambulance Centre

Construction of the new Katherine St John Ambulance Centre will begin in a matter of weeks with Territory business C & R Constructions Pty Ltd awarded the tender.

Chief Minister Adam Giles said that the Northern Territory Government has contributed $7.6m to the project from the sale of TIO.

“In November 2014, the Country Liberals Government announced a $25 million funding package for flood mitigation for Katherine.

“The Katherine St John Ambulance Centre on Kintore Street, a critical piece of infrastructure, had been identified as being subject to flooding,” Mr Giles said.

“The relocation of the Ambulance Centre is a key component of the Katherine Flood Mitigation strategy.

“The new multi-purpose 1000sqm ambulance station is a single level structure and will accommodate ambulance crew/staff on a 24 hour basis.

“Additionally, the new Katherine St John Ambulance Centre will provide accommodation for visiting staff, a venue for training; it will be a facility for overflow disaster patient care, a workspace for disaster management personnel to back up the Darwin site.

“During construction, there will be over twenty five workers on site, including six Indigenous workers.”

Member for Katherine Willem Westra Van Holthe said he is absolutely delighted that the new ambulance station is coming to fruition.

“This was an election promise of mine in 2012 and one of the goals that I set myself as the local member,” Mr Westra van Holthe said.

“The current building is antiquated, old and frankly, not fit for purpose.

“This is the first time any Government has implemented and funded a flood mitigation strategy for Katherine and it’s a real testament to this Government’s commitment to our town.”

St John Ambulance CEO Ross Coburn said the centre will bring an array of community benefits to the Katherine community.

“Moving the St John Ambulance Centre provides a great opportunity after years of operating out of a centre that we’ve well and truly grown out of,” Mr Coburn said.

“There is the opportunity for real growth in the future having upgraded facilities at the new centre.

“The new centre allows us to have a real home for our volunteers.”
