Tennant Creek will receive a significant revamp to its town centre thanks to a $1.45 million grant from the Territory Labor Government for the Barkly Streetscape Project.
Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler said the Northern Territory Government is improving infrastructure and amenities in regional centres to ensure they are safe, vibrant and sustainable places.
“This investment in Tennant Creek will provide an engaging community space for residents and visitors, while creating local jobs,” Ms Lawler said.
“It will improve lighting and pedestrian safety and enhance shopfronts on the main street to make Tennant Creek a more attractive place to work, live and visit.”
This investment follows Health Minister Natasha Fyles’ announcement of $5 million to construct a residential rehabilitation facility and the tender awarded for a new $6.3 million Early Childhood Centre in Tennant Creek.
Member for Barkly, Gerry McCarthy said the Territory Labor Government is creating jobs and developing the Barkly region as a great place to stay, live and invest.
“These projects contribute greatly to the local economy by providing employment and training opportunities for local residents, the construction industry and other local businesses,” he said.
“Creating a pipeline of works for the community means job opportunities for Territorians, including our Aboriginal Territorians who comprise a large part of our local workforce.
Ms Lawler said the Capital Grants Program was delivering job creating projects right across the Territory.
“Local jobs and vibrant communities are top priorities for the Territory Labor Government,” she said.
