The Northern Territory Government is working together with the City of Darwin to get a head start on delivering the vision of the draft Darwin City Centre Master Plan.

Acting Minister for Transport, Gary Higgins said the Department of Transport is calling for tenders for the detailed design of a new Barneson Boulevard link from Tiger Brennan Drive into Darwin City Centre.

“This is a positive step forward for Darwin and I am thrilled to see the Northern Territory Government work hand in hand with the City of Darwin to improve ease of travel for Territorians,” Mr Higgins said.

“The development of the Barneson Boulevard link is an integral part of the future strategy to cater for the increased traffic demand into the Darwin City Centre as works to complete the duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive from Berrimah Road to Woolner Road race ahead.”

Lord Mayor, Katrina Fong Lim said this is one of the flagship projects of the City Centre Master Plan and will certainly unlock the potential of our city,”

“The City of Darwin will continue to work with the Northern Territory Government to follow our Master Plan to improve the connectivity of our tropical liveable city.” she added.

The design tender will be advertised for four weeks and it is expected that the design commission will be awarded in June.

The scope of the tender includes the finalised concept designs, detailed design of a new Barneson Boulevard link from Tiger Brennan Drive to Cavenagh Street and concept designs for the future duplication of McMinn Street and Tiger Brennan Drive from Dinah Beach Road to Darwin City Centre.

“The draft Darwin City Centre Master Plan Project provides a blueprint and guide for Darwin’s growth over the next 20 years,” Mr Higgins said.

“It will focus on developing the urban design themes including improving the entrance points to the city centre, creating a walkable city and linking the open space and harbour networks.

“Our government will continue to work with the City of Darwin to ensure Territorians live a simpler, safer and smarter lifestyle.” Mr Higgins said.
