WORKS are now complete on a $710,000 upgrade of Hodgsons River Road in the Northern Territory, with the project set to improve road access for the Minyerri community during wet seasons.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the project was fully funded by the Australian Government under the $2.1 billion Roads to Recovery Programme.
“Hodgsons River Road is a key link for two pastoral stations and the Minyerri community, with the road previously restricted to four wheel drive access for three months of the year when the rain sets in during the wet season,” Mr Truss said.
“The installation of ten concrete inverts will improve road safety and access for local motorists, ensuring residents have better access during the wet.”
Senator for Northern Territory Nigel Scullion said construction has already delivered economic benefits to the region.
“Katherine-based employer Woodhill & Sons Pty Ltd were awarded the contract to deliver these upgrades in December 2014, with the project employing a total of 12 workers,” Mr Scullion said.
“Projects such as these will ensure the Northern Territory economy remains strong, particularly with the doubling of funding for the Roads to Recovery programme in 2015-16, which will deliver an extra $350 million for projects around the nation.”
Northern Territory Minister for Transport Peter Chandler said the project had delivered significant road safety outcomes.
“Previously this road was prone to flooding and washouts during the wet season, making it very difficult for drivers whose means of travel was via a standard car, not a four wheel drive,” Mr Chandler said.
“Works on this project finished a week ago and I am pleased to see a safer and stronger regional road network.”
