The NT government has approved a $100 million development in Alice Springs to construct an “urban village” consisting of apartments, tourist accommodation and shops.
NT Minister for Lands and Planning, David Tollner, approved plans for the development which will reside on the old Melanka Resort site.
“The Territory government supports well-designed developments which enhance the community and create new jobs and homes for local people,” Tollner said.
The planned eight-storey complex has undergone extensive public consultation, and is expected to create around 300 jobs during construction.
NT Chief Minister, Adam Giles, said the development would be a first for Alice Springs.
“This development will provide a significant economic boost for Alice Springs. Creating new homes, new jobs and new opportunities for local businesses,” Giles said.
“It will also provide more choice for people looking to buy a home in Alice Springs and more retail and entertainment choices for all residents.”
The development will include 190 new dwellings and 86 serviced apartments, as well as offices, a licensed club and child care centre.
