Optimising the NT’s current and future infrastructure

Major-scale infrastructure projects across the Northern Territory are being planned and developed for the region’s economic growth. Areas of interest range across the transport, farming, healthcare, cultural centres and tourism sectors. These exciting times come after the Commonwealth Government and the Northern Territory Government signed the City Deal contract, and the additional $1.7- billion investment program for the region outlined in the Territory Budget. One of the biggest planned infrastructure projects to note is the Northern Gas Pipeline.

The pipeline’s estimated cost will be $800-million, and will span the 622-kilometre distance between Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory to Queensland’s Mount Isa. Responsible for the project’s construction is Jemena, a $10.5 billion infrastructure company, and their Project Services Manager, Craig Bergin, will be discussing the pipeline at the 8th Annual NT Major Projects Conference on the 18th and 19th of October at the Darwin Convention Centre.

Another natural resource infrastructure proposed for the Territory is the Chandler Facility Project. The salt mine will be located 120-kilometers south of Alice Springs and 15-kilometers away from the Titjikala community. Part of the $676-million mine’s purpose is boost the export of salt into the Asian market and to create hundreds of jobs across the facility. Richard Phillips, Tellus Holdings LTD Health, Safety, Environment, Community and Compliance (HSECC) General Manager will also presenting at this year’s Major Projects Conference.

Focussing on Darwin’s eligible position for economic growth is the $150-million upgrade to the Darwin Port. The Port’s Chief Executive Director, Terry O’Connor, will reveal the project’s infrastructure plans and construction strategy at the upcoming conference. Proposed to cater to Darwin’s growing position as an import and export hub, the port’s bulk material handling facilities, particularly the traditional sectors of cattle export, oil and gas, will be expanded in an attempt to maximise the region’s potential for international trade.

Other upgrades to the Territory include the opening of the Palmerston Regional Hospital. At this year’s conference, Glen Brady, the Project Director of the Northern Territory’s Government Department of Infrastructure of Planning and Logistics will talk to delegates about the $170 million project. The structure will be the first public hospital in the region for 40 years. It will feature 116 beds and will be one of the most technological advanced health facilities in the Territory.

These and other infrastructure developments will be discussed in presentations hosted by sector professionals during The 8th Annual NT Major Projects Conference. Held on the 18th and 19th of October at the Darwin Convention Centre, the conference will discuss infrastructure, innovation and design in the Northern Territory.
