Two bridges on the Roper Highway have been planned for construction over the coming weeks to help assist with flood resistance.
Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, said the project will improve access to local communities during the wet season.
“The Australian government is contributing $32 million to the project which is part of the Regional Roads Productivity Package under the Infrastructure Investment Programme,” Truss said.
“In total, the Australian Government is investing $90 million under the Northern Territory Regional Roads Productivity Package, which includes upgrading six regional roads to improve flood immunity, safety and reliability for communities.”
The existing Roper River and Wilton River crossings are bed level crossings prone to flooding during the wet season.
The contract was awarded to Sitzler Pty Ltd for construction of the two new bridges.
Minister for Transport, Peter Chandler, said 7.3 kilometres of approach roads will be reconstructed in addition to the bridges.
“Sitzler will manage delivery of the project and are focused on increasing indigenous employment through release of small works packages aimed at Indigenous Business Enterprises and local contractors,” said Chandler.
