The Northern Territory government is seeking applications for the construction of a new boarding facility in Nhulunbuy.
Minister for Infrastructure, Peter Chandler, said the facility would cater for 40 students with future potential to increase to 80 students.
“This boarding facility will ensure Indigenous students from remote and very remote communities have access to quality secondary education provision and are prepared for future opportunities in either employment or further education,” Chandler said.
“The design features six buildings interconnected by walkways and includes two 20 bed residential blocks, a communal facility, an administration centre and housing for the manager and deputy manager.”
The facility will include single, double and four bed student rooms, as well as a commercial kitchen, dining facilities and other facilities.
Member for Solomon, Natasha Griggs, said the Australian government was contributing $9.4 million for the project.
“It’s a substantial spend, but an investment which keeps higher education open to all is an investment worth making,” Griggs said.
“Geographic or cultural Isolation should not prevent young people from getting a quality education.”
Nhulunbuy High School was selected as the site for the residential facility because of its close proximity to North East Arnhem Land.
