Building Better Schools and Creating Local Jobs: Round 2

Posted On March 26, 2018

Territory schools and businesses will benefit from Round Two of the Territory Labor Government’s Building Better Schools initiative.

Minister for Education, Eva Lawler, said the $300,000 funding for every Territory school allows school communities to prioritise new and improved infrastructure to enhance student learning.

“Building Better Schools was an election promise,” Ms Lawler said. “This government is investing in education because our children are our future.

“Round Two will see 36 Territory government schools, and nine non-government schools undertake projects to improve their facilities, including new playgrounds, shade structures, Families as First Teachers facility upgrades and classroom refurbishments.”

Ms Lawler visited Sanderson Middle School today to view their Round One Building Better Schools project – three upgraded science labs.

Sanderson Middle School Principal, Liz Veel, said the $300,000 had helped the school provide modern facilities for students.

“The upgraded labs have helped students practice STEM in a hands-on way, using new technologies,” Ms Veel said.

“We want all our students to be STEM learners and to be the solvers of future problems. This can now be achieved with our funded upgrades.”

Ms Lawler said the Building Better Schools program – $56.4 million in total  – is being rolled out over four years, providing a steady stream of work for local contractors.

“This work is spread out across the Territory, so all regions will benefit,” she said.

Schools will be invited to submit an Expression of Interest for Round Three of Building Better Schools in October this year.
