Creating Jobs: $10.3 million tender for Darwin Middle School Multi-Purpose Hall Awarded

Posted On November 10, 2018

Territory company Sunbuild has won the $10.3 million tender to construct a new multi-purpose hall at Darwin Middle School, a project that will support 100 construction jobs for the next year.

The multi-purpose hall is the second stage of the $39 million redevelopment of the Bullocky Point Education Precinct, which will see state-of-the-art new buildings on the site shared by Darwin High School, Darwin Middle School and the NT School of Distance Education.

The first stage of the redevelopment, a $15.9 million Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) centre at Darwin High School, was awarded in June, also to Sunbuild.

Construction is well advanced on that project, which has supported 300 local jobs.

The new Darwin Middle School multi-purpose hall will provide modern and flexible spaces that will support sports, music, art and drama and provide indoor space for school assemblies and events.

Among the 100 workers Sunbuild intends to employ are 31 Aboriginal employees and an Aboriginal apprentice.

Construction is expected to begin before the end of this year and continue through to the end of 2019.

Quotes from Acting Minister for Education, Nicole Manison.

“The Territory Labor Government’s absolute priority is jobs and the $39 million Bullocky Point Education Precinct Redevelopment is supporting, and will continue to support, hundreds of jobs.

“We came to Government with a plan to create jobs, invest in infrastructure and improve the lives of all Territorians. We are delivering on that plan.

“Unlike the CLP, who ripped $135 million from the education budget and sacked teachers and support staff, the Territory Labor Government will always invest in schools and in our children.

“It is not just the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do for the Territory’s future.”
